Venture outside of London to explore several of the area's famous attractions on this private guided tour. Led by a knowledgeable driver / guide, this full-day guided tour shows you the city of Oxford, the medieval town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the countryside region of the scenic Cotswolds.
We start the morning with a quiet visit to Stratford’s 800 year old church. Here you have the opportunity to see one of the most famous graves in the world; William Shakespeare. Buried alongside most of his family, many rumours have lurked over the question of Shakespeare is still buried here! Even he had superstitions of his body being relocated, to the extent that he put a curse on his grave that can still be seen today: “Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare, To dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares these stones, And cursed be he that moves my bones.”
As we leave the Holy Trinity Church, your driver/guide will take you on a panoramic tour Stratford, pointing out Halls Croft, King Edward VI School, New Place and ending on Henley Street where The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is. Here you will be given free time to go inside Shakespeare’s home if you wish and explore the town for yourselves.
As we depart Stratford your driver/guide will take you on a short 5 minute drive to the delightful Hamlet of Shottery; the place where Shakespeare’s wife was raised. Here you can visit Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and grounds and envisage what this area was like 500 years ago. This stunning 16th Century cottage is certain to impress.
In the afternoon we depart Warwickshire and head South into the rolling hills of The Cotswolds. You’ll here stories of wool trade and the inevitable decline of market towns as you pass by Cotswold Villages rich in golden limestone. We will stop at Stow-on-the-Wold for lunch and time to explore many of the curious little shops it has to offer. Speaking of lunch, why not try out The Porch House, which is the Oldest English Inn in England and serves wonderful home made fish and chips! The local church also has Saxon routes, and has a fantastic oak door columned by two old Yew Trees. It is believed that this door was J.R.R. Tolkien’s inspiration for the Doors of Durin in his Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but who knows?!
The twin villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter are amongst some of our favourite villages to tour to because they are so remote. In our 8 seat tour van we can get away from the big bus tours to enjoy these very quiet little villages and their cotswold charm. Upper Slaughter has a ford (river crossing) that we can drive through (subject to weather) and you can catch a glimpse of scenes filmed from the popular series Father Brown. Lower Slaughter’s main street has recently been voted by Google Maps as ‘The Most Romantic Street in Britain’ following over 20,000 votes in a poll. The Water Mill in Lower Slaughter dates back to The Doomsday Book of 1086 and is still in working order today! A tea room, shop and museum are also located within the building.
What better way to end your fun filled day than with a visit to The Oldest English Speaking University in the world!? Here your tour guide will escort you around the cobbled streets of Oxford enlightening you about Oxford’s unique history and buildings on a walking tour. You’ll go past many Oxford Colleges and University Buildings from Balliol, St. Johns, All Saints, Exeter, Braisenose College and many more. You’ll also get the chance to see where much of the early scenes of Harry Potter were filmed, and take a look inside these buildings if you’re a big fan of the movies!
